Ceremonial Robes

Literature is one subject that I have grown to love.

I loved my literature class back at the Senior High School and was always eager to be in that class. Some wondered whether it was the subject I loved or the woman behind the subject. And this is a woman that everybody feared and was extremely careful when around her. You needed some tact to survive around her lol

Well, I loved the woman very much and I loved the subject in equal proportion. You cannot fault me on that. It may have been my love for the subject that caused my love for the woman behind the subject or vice versa. Which ever that came first may really not matter; the love was there.

I could never miss a literature class and oh! you dare not miss the class. Otherwise you will be haunted all the days of your literature life by this extremely firm and no-nonsense woman.

She gave us a collection of poems which had to be studied and recited by heart or by mind; which ever way! Once you got the words out of your mouth, you were good to go. And she had a habit of making us recite the poems in unison as a class whenever she entered the class before the main lesson began.

The poems were many but lovable and so studying them by heart was a pleasure to those of us who loved literature.

There was one particular poem which started with the phrase 'they came concealed in ceremonial robes'. And this poem was my favorite. It talked about how the white man made a subtle entry into the African world as 'Saints' to propagate the Gospel but later duped the African of all their riches including their self-confidence and self-respect.The thing that makes this poem unique is that it employed a lot of symbolism and imagery and made us rack our brains so hard in order to get understanding of the message of the poem.

This morning as I woke up from my bed and was reflecting on my life amidst giving praise and thanks to God, the thought of the poem came rushing into my mind. And I descended into the realms of reflective thinking.

Many at times, so many people come into our lives 'concealed in ceremonial robes'. White Robes! Beautifully Bright Robes! Some wear the ceremonial robes of friendship, love and kindness. And these robes are so shinning that we fall into their friendship, love and kindness only to end up being duped of the joy, peace and love we had in our hearts prior to their entry.

Their ceremonial robes cover their real intentions of their coming into our lives so much that we are left in a state of absolute shock when we finally realize that they are only looters of our joy, peace and love.

Their ceremonial robes which cover their heads to toes reveal no iota of their real identities when they approach. They offer to us their 'schnapps', 'spices', and the 'likes' which they know we need and lure us to accept them as real friends.

Based on these offers, we assume that they are here for good and we open our palms to accept them wholeheartedly. We go ahead and show them where the  'valuables' and 'riches' of our land are kept. It is then that they loot and dupe us and leave us grasping for the wind because they think there is nothing else left for us to hold onto.

Yes, they always come concealed in ceremonial robes; White Robes! Beautifully Bright Robes!
